RELOCALIZATION RESOURCE GROUPS

In February 2006, BVR will be launching a special project to begin formulating a strategic community relocalization plan for Boulder Valley. The first stage of the process will be to form Relocalization Resource Groups which will research, discuss and provide summary reports with recommendations in specific areas:

  1. The energy crisis
  2. Relocalizing energy and heating
  3. Relocalizing food production and distribution
  4. Relocalizing manufacturing and employment
  5. Health care
  6. Parallel economic infrastructure
  7. Transportation
  8. Crisis preparedness
  9. Preparation: Our Community, Our Selves

Each group will be tasked with the following:

  • Define existing situation
  • Identify coming challenges
  • Evaluate local resources
  • Explore range of response options
  • Propose recommendations

The relocalization planning process for Boulder Valley will be a months-long project, and will require a sustained commitment from a large number of people. To prepare for this process, we request that you take some time to review the following materials:

Willits Economic LocaLization (WELL): www.willitseconomiclocalization.org
The community of Willits, California began the relocalization process in Oct. 2004, organized by Dr. Jason Bradford. On this site—a very rich resource—you will find much about what they have accomplished and the challenges they face today. There is much we can learn from their experience.

Tompkins County Relocalization Project: www.ibiblio.org/tcrp/
“…a
n initiative of residents of Tompkins County, New York. It is not an activity of county government but rather a citizens' effort to prepare a plan for eventual submission to county government.” Their core working document, an outline of how they are developing their relocalization plan, will be an important guide for Boulder Valley’s process (http://ibiblio.org/tcrp/doc/project.htm).

Kinsale, Ireland Energy Descent Action Plan: Perhaps the most advanced relocalization plan to be developed anywhere on the planet to date. Long, but very worthwhile and informative... (http://www.planputnam.org/documents/KinsaleEnergyDescentActionPlan.pdf)
“Designing Energy Descent Pathways: One community’s attempt at designing a prosperous way down from the peak”:  (http://www.energybulletin.net/9230.html).
